New Parishioners
Welcome to the Body of Christ lived out here at the Church of the Ascension!
Choosing to become part of this faith community is choosing to become a link in a family, not become a member of a group. What makes Ascension special is our commitment to each other.
Some people see a faith affiliation as just another preference, much like being a Democrat or a Republican. Catholics see it, however, as the core of who we are and that is what we attempt to live out in this parish. Being Catholic defines our approach to all of life - the way we use our time and our money, the way we respond when we are in conflict with someone, and the way we understand the complex social issues of the day. This isn’t easy. We need the support of the church family at Ascension to help us make the choices that bring unconditional love into all we do and to all we encounter.
Our church building may be different from those you’ve worshipped in before. For one thing, we don’t have much of a permanent art collection. We do have a rich, ever changing collection of images, however, that we display on a projection screen during the liturgy. These expand the readings and prayers and are a fresh source of inspiration every week.
The Commons area is meant to be a place for people to get to know one another in order to bring their lives and concerns, along with our own, into the worship space for liturgy. St. Paul describes the church as brothers and sisters in “the Body of Christ.” This means that there are no strangers here and that the life or death of the people sitting next to us is important whether or not we have ever been in their house.
Ascension lives out this belief in the interconnectedness of all of us in any number of ways. We attend the Mass of the Resurrection of a fellow parishioner – even those we don’t know – and bring finger food for the reception afterwards. At the communal Reconciliation services, we stay and pray for those who are still approaching the priest after we have returned to our seats. We come early to liturgy so that we can establish relationships and we don’t leave until the final song is over.
Ascension is not a parish that is run by the clergy. It is served by wonderful priests and deacons, but it makes a difference in people’s lives because the community gets involved in changing our internal and external world. From the Liturgy Committee to the Parish Council, from the Starting Over group to the ministries that serve the poor, homeless and sick, there is a way to serve in this parish.
Ascension is not a place to dash in and leave just as quickly. We can make a difference in your life if you let us, just as you can make a difference in ours. Complete the registration form below or fill out one when you come to liturgy or get one at the parish office (see map). Please write to us at hospitality.ascension@gmail.com or call the parish office at 495-1886. if you would like to talk about getting more involved here. Thanks for visiting our site!
