Empower Hampton Roads

Funeral Ministry

Assist in kitchen with food for a reception after the Funeral Liturgy and to aid members of the grieving family. Contact Person: Pat Bugeja 548-1229 or bugedpat@cox.net.

Parish Nurses

Anyone who works in the Health Care Field and would like to assist in this ministry. Contact Person: Patty Stanford 471-5322,

Giving Tree

We help make Christmas a more joyous time for underprivileged children and adults. Ministers make Giving Tree tags, sort, wrap, and buy gifts, and occasionally deliver gifts. We're a match for Santa's elves. Contact Person: Kathy McNamara 460-4941 or mkmac1@cox.net.

Golden Age Ministry

Volunteers are needed for transportation for our "golden agers" to doctor appointments, bringing people to church; small home repairs, phone calls, letter writing or bill paying; grocery shopping, or just a friendly visit. Contact Person: Rosemary and Jim Thietje 363-2680 or thietje@cox.net.

Habitat for Humanity

We join with other churches, and Habitat to use our skills to build a house for a low income family. We can use volunteers in every aspect of construction, and also people to aid the builders, lunch preparation, etc. Contact Person: Matt Schorr 467-4112 or mschorr2@cox.net.

Holiday Food

Thanksgiving and Christmas offers a special time to provide food for poor families. We collect, sort, pack and distribute the boxes. Contact Person: Bob and Maureen Ianucci 497-7734 or robert.ianucci@1960.usna.com.

Meals on Wheels

Pick up and deliver hot and cold meals 10:30am to 1:30pm to a prepared list of shut-ins, one day per week per month. The route list is very easy to follow, even if you are not familiar with all parts of our city. Contact Person: Social Ministry Office 495-1886 x 14 or anderss@ascensionvb.org.

Ministry to Homeless

We will be participating in Volunteers of America winter shelter during February 2008 . We provide meals, laundry, fellowship, showers and a warm, safe place to sleep. Contact Person: Ann Goodman 202-9129 or Ed and Pat Bugeja at 548-1229 or bugedpat@cox.net.

Ministry to the Sick

Provide visits and take Eucharist to parishioners who are hospitalized or homebound. Contact: Gary and Karen Harmeyer 495-1258 or harmeyerg@ascensionvb.org.

Parish Food Pantry

Organize and maintain Ascension's Food Pantry; take weekly food cart collection to pantry. Assist with food shopping when necessary. Pack food for families and individuals needing assistance. Contact Person: Phyllis Hunt 482-4062.

Soup Kitchen

Once every 2 months prepare and/or serve dinner to the homeless and pre-homeless at Judeo-Christian Outreach Shelter, Virginia Beach Blvd., near Birdneck Road . Contact Person: Marie Thompson 467-3207.

Sowers of Justice

Follow your passion and join this vibrant Catholic network of volunteers to educate yourself and others on issues of Social Justice. Monthly meetings offer focus groups that encompass a wide range of issues from death penalty to the environment and respect life. Starting Over and Beyond

This is a unique, peer, support group for the widowed, single, sparated, divorced segment of the church. Sharing your story can lead you to hope and wholeness. The group provides an opportunity to get to know other widowed/singles within the Parish. Meetings held on Sundays at Ascension at 6:00-8:00pm in the Conference Room. Disaster Response Ministry

Voluneers are needed to be on call to respond to emergency situations in our church and community. VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) and Ascension are committed to work with the American Red Cross and other agencies to help people affected by disaster. Help will depend upon the nature of the disaster, but would most likely involve cleanup, preparation and delivery of meals, transportation, minor repairs and coordinating services. World Food Day
