Responding to God's Invitation to Mindfulness

I love you and I invite you to be MINDFUL of me, Love God

To be “mindful” means to be fully present in the moment and responding to the opportunities God is presenting me within this moment.

 For Reflection:
  • In what areas of my life do I need to me more mindful (aware)?
  • What keeps me from being mindful?  Why?
  • What are two things I can do to live more in the present moment and be mindful of others around me and God’s presence?
Mindfulness Prayer

Loving Father, You are everywhere and in every moment of our day.  You are constantly calling us, nudging us, pursuing us, so that we know your love.  You place others in our lives, desiring that we share your love with them. But we are often distracted and sometimes our past and worries about the future get in our way.  Forgive us for not paying attention to the here and now.  Give us the grace to be mindful in this moment and the courage to respond to the invitation as it is before me.   For each moment is precious and the grace within it unique.  We ask this through Christ Our Lord, Amen

Be Mindful

What does it mean when God asks me to be mindful? It means two things.  First, to be aware and pay attention to what is happening not only with me, but what is going on around me at any given moment.  The second part of His invitation is to ask myself,  “What can I do or give in this moment?”   It could be as simple as a silent prayer or a smile.  It could be something bigger such as taking the time to really listen to someone or addressing a specific need.  It depends on the moment and what God is calling me to do.   I just need to be mindful and grasp these opportunities one moment at a time.  It is truly an act of stewardship, using the time and faith and gifts He’s given me to help build His kingdom on earth.

Ways to practice being “’Mindful”

  • Make a conscious decision during different aspects of your day to pay attention to what you are thinking and feeling in the moment and what is going on around you. Offer it to God. Is this an opportunity to thank God, ask for direction, listen to God? A time to do something for someone else?
  • Make time for a daily “retreat” – set aside a few minutes every day to think about the last few hours or the day. How have you used your time today?  Have you been mindful, paying attention to what is going on around you?  How have your responded? 
  • Practice using “breath Prayers”, simple short phrases or a few words to you might use in thanksgiving, seeking guidance or for someone else.
  • Look for moments during busy Christmas preparations to be more mindful. How am I responding to all of it?
  • When buying food items or filling food baskets during the Holidays think about what it will mean for those receiving them. Pray for them and their future needs. 
  • Reflect on Mary’s mindfulness on her journey and preparations for the birth of Jesus. How do you think she responded to what was going on around her?
