  • Know that accidents or mistakes are not sin
  • Understand sin as deliberately choosing to do wrong in violation of God’s commandments
  • Love of God and love of neighbor- who is my neighbor
  • 10 Commandments
  • Recognize their need for forgiveness from other people and from God
  • Know that God loves them unconditionally
  • Know the person of Jesus and his message of forgiveness
  • Understand the sacraments as a means of receiving forgiveness
  • Understand the difference between simply telling God that one is sorry and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • Know how to receive the sacrament
How do we keep reconciliation fresh
  • Finish working in the workbook and complete the poster. You'll turn this in on the day of the retreat
  • Routine Before Going to Bed- Think about your day
    • What really good thing happened today? Give thanks to God!
    • Where did you not do what you were supposed to? Ask God for forgiveness!
    • What do I want to do better tomorrow? Ask God to help you!
    • Who does God need to help- someone who is sick or having trouble? Ask God to help that person!
    • Pray the Lord’s Prayer or the Act of Contrition
Act Of Contrition

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and in failing to do good,
I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen

1st Holy Communion

Reflection Question:
  • What was your 1st Holy Communion like?
  • Why is 1st Holy Communion important to you as a parent for your child?
  • What has it been like being physically separated from the Eucharist and the community?
What we need to teach our kids…
  • Know the Father’s love, Christ’s sacrifice, and the gift of the Holy Spirit
  • Understand that the Mass makes present the saving death and resurrection of Jesus and recalls his last meal with his disciples
  • Realize that with their 1st Holy Communion they become fully-participating members of the Body of Christ
  • Learn the difference between Eucharist and ordinary food
  • Participate consciously and actively in the Mass (gestures, postures, and processions; responses, acclamations and prayers)
  • Learn to receive Christ’s Body and Blood reverently
  • Learn about receiving Holy Communion under both species of bread and wine
Learn the difference between Eucharist and ordinary food
  • This is what makes us different as Catholics
  • This is not a symbol or representation – it is the real thing

JESUS IS FULLY AND INTIMATELY PRESENT TO US IN THE BREAD AND THE WINE THAT HAVE BECOME THE BODY AND BLOOD OF THE RISEN LORD!

  • Once the bread and wine are prayed over- they are forever changed- consecrated hosts are in the tabernacle – consecrated wine is consumed
Preparing for Eucharist
  • Share with them the impact on you to not be able to physically share in the Eucharist
  • Begin/Finish working in the Pflaum workbook & complete the poster
